As far as I am aware, 'The Fourth Kind' takes a unique approach to telling it's story. Presented as a reenactment of actual events, 'archival' footage and audio of the actual events play at points throughout the film, often along side the reenacted footage in split screen.

This is a wonderful idea and gives the film a documentary-esque feel, which adds to the supposed realism. Whether real footage or not, this technique greatly enhances the dramatic impact of the film and the realistic look of the archival footage makes for some seriously chilling moments.

Occasionally, when the split screening went into overdrive, and four different images were on screen at once, it became a little messy and distracting. I also felt that at times the film tried a little too hard to convince the audience that it was real.
