Review of The Four Musketeers (1974) by Richard V — 07 Apr 2009
Adds breadth and depth to the original (though as is noted elsewhere, they were supposed to be one film) and a dark seam which helps explain the joie de vivre of the characters rather than simply make fun of it, this is nevertheless and unashamedly enjoyable as the first.
The cast is outstanding, with Christopher Lee adding a delicious line in humour to the arrogance of the first film, and Charlton Heston relishing his evil schemer performance. In comparison to modern films, this might be pure Sunday afternoon escapist film, but those are often the ones remembered most fondly.
Enjoy.
