Review of The Fountainhead (1949) by Richard H — 15 Jun 2008
What separates a four star King Vidor picture from a five star one from some other director? I'll tell you. Directors like Cukor, Wilder and Huston didn't spoon feed an audience. They worked on the premise that audiences were smart.
If you give them enough information they'll figure things out on their own. Where Vidor held a viewer's hand and led them through a story, directors like Hitchcock simply pointed them in the direction they wanted them to go.
Vidor is one of the great ones, he made some of the best, most memorable classics of all time, but it's evident here in The Fountainhead that he didn't give the average moviegoer much credit.
