Review of The Fountain (2006) by Art S — 12 Nov 2011
"Therefore, the Lord God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden Of Eden and placed a flaming sword to protect the tree of life.".
~Genesis 3:24~.
Director Darren Aronfsky (Requiem For A Dream, The Wrestler, Black Swan) is back with yet another ultra-dramatic and highly original motion picture. A love story that's unlike any other love story out there, The Fountain is a bombastically visual explosion, a profound and spectacular experience that will leave you breathless, a timeless journey through life, space, time and love. The Fountain is an iconic blast of nerve-searing originality, a tremendously joyful philosophical symphony of daring and boldly mind-blowing concepts that only Darren Aronofsky could execute this well. It features truly spectacular crystal-clear, sparkling visuals that are an optical explosion. It's kinetic, magnetic, electrifying, unique, charasmatic, magnificent, deep, poetic, glamorous, beautiful, glorious and spellbinding all at once. Astonishingly mysterious, deeply romantic, utterly gripping, flat-out hypnotizing, mind-blowingly extraordinary, downright vivid and strikingly fascinating, The Fountain is a spiritual journey that's unlike anything that you've ever seen. The space sequences are nothing short of truly spellbinding, the visuals will cause an optical orgasm, they are beautifully gorgeous. Darren Aronofsky shows his broad spectrum of dramatic filmmaking, he is one of the elite drama directors in the game today, the man just knows how to make deeply involving and intriguing films.
The acting is great with excellent performances from Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz, both have great romantic chemistry and work off of each other with outstanding results. Ellen Burstyn gives a strong performance as well. Give this film a chance and be patient with it, it really pays off.
