Review of The Fountain (2006) by Alvin Y — 08 Oct 2011
Darren Aronofsky's "The Fountain" is one of his dazzling and breathtaking movie ever since his other films like "Requiem for a Dream", "Wrestler", and "Black Swan". Sure, what's not to hate Aronofsky, his artsy style of filmmaking is what makes those movies so incredibly breathtaking even at the 2nd viewing or 1st viewing. As watching this movie, it reminded me as well of Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life", so grandeur that most viewers are so booed about the concept, so does this movie, there's no thinking about that this is a confusing or relentless one.
In many movies I've watched in my whole life, this is I think the one that I actually felt *into it*, or being involved in the movie itself. From the performances of Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz, you never ever think for a second why they truly love each other. Spanning three worlds and time, all are very similar but not connected, as a quest for the eternal life to Jackman's character to save Weisz from death. And here's what I think the lesson of the movie; the only way for the two of them to live forever to love each other is to die together. OK, so they must die both at the end, and you'll find out!
Alright, how could I never forget the mesmerizing soundtrack that really feels the true meaning of the film itself. How also the script is not very cliched or tiresome, that saying I love you or please don't die, is not very pitiful. And how also Aronofsky dares to make a movie like this, and the result is really tough to say, but easy to follow through.
Like also some other mindbending film's like "2001", "Vanilla Sky", "Memento", "Mulholland Drive", "Inception", this could be called an original masterpiece in the genre of romance. And believe me, as many people say this is truly awful, it ain't really bad, it's just they don't have an open mind to see this piece of filmmaking at it's best.
And Darren Aronofsky should get an Oscar winning soon, his films are truly cinematic, and that's what the audiences want, to left breathless and speechless after the movie is over. It's sad that this movie was not commercially become a true great movie, and now it should be and ever it will be.
