Review of The Fountain (2006) by Kherry M — 31 Mar 2013
Rented this, liked it much more than I remember liking it the first time. It's not really sci fi but whatever. I'm not sure the present-day story works (in which Rachel Weisz's character suffers from cancer), but the Mayan/conquistador backstory is compelling.
And the visuals of the "future" story are breathtaking. The film is unique and should be viewed as such, savored for its originality. At 92 minutes, there's a lot in it every moment. I would love to see its whole Mayan/conquistador story made into a separate science fiction film (set solely in Spanish Conquest times).
I loved the person they found to play the Mayan priest -- Fernando Hernandez -- a Mexican actor who was also in Mel Gibson's 'Apocalypto', playing a high priest in it too. 'The Fountain' is a great Saturday-afternoon view at home on the trusty couch.
Not profound fare, but interesting.
