Review of The Fountain (2006) by Sarita K — 02 Nov 2013
This is not your typical science fiction movie (there isn't much action, the glimpse into the future is narrowly focused on one character in a surreal environment, there are no aliens) nor is it your typical love story. This is a very thoughtful movie that explores one man's obsession with saving the love of his life and the ways he and she cope with her impending fate.
The acting is strong, particularly from Hugh Jackman---who plays three different characters/versions of himself (?) and each is very distinct. The visuals and soundtrack are stunning. There a big, universal themes---the meaning of life, the power of love, coping with death---that are presented in a completely unique way.
The only reason I do not give this 5 stars is that I felt like there was a bit too much recycled footage (several scenes are repeated throughout the movie) that do not reveal any new information about the characters. Also, the conclusion leaves too much to the imagination for my tastes. I would have liked some more closure.
Recommendation: leave your expectations aside and just watch the movie. I think you will likely be very moved by the end of the film.
