Review of The Fountain (2006) by Andrew R — 02 Nov 2011
An epic, elegiac sci-fi/fantasy that spans centuries, and tackles the fears and awe of death; this is not a movie for most. It feels as if Aronofsky wanted to bring paintings to life--the special effects and cinematography are splendid, infusing the film, enhancing its often meditative aura, rather than just being flashy. He interweaves mythology, space and time, love, fear and death in a truly poetic fashion that leaves me breathless. Not to mention stellar performances by Rachael Weisz and Hugh Jackman (the latter especially impressed me.).
It may have tended to be a little heavy at times, but I can forgive that. It sweeps me away.
