Review of The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) by Jesse B — 30 Sep 2009
What a crazy film! I didn't know what to expect going into this film, though I knew it was something of a comedy take on Crouching Tiger films. The film is about a boy - who is obsessed with all things Kung Fu, from Bruce Lee to Street Figher games - finding a magical Bo staff only to be transported into another world. A world of magic and kung fu! He must return the staff to the legendary Monkey King, to bring an end to the tyranny of the Jade Warlord.
Pretty straight forward, but it is an entertaining film; Jet Li as a Soldier Monk and the Monkey King is amusing, while Jackie Chan drunken fighting is impressive to see!
The wire-fu is deliberate and wacky, but there is a good deal of nice action sequences and choreography. (usually revolving around Chan's crazy drunken skills!) I was pleasantly surprised at its simple entertainment value.
