Review of The Flying Scotsman (2006) by Navin P — 03 Jan 2010
The story of a English..er, make that Scottish cyclist who's attempting to break a world record, with a cycle made out of, among other thing, washing machine parts, is a great watch. The scenes showing him alter his bike to conform to WCF standards (in the movie the WCF does everything possible to disqualify Obree), despite the constantly changing rules, is hilarious.
Watching Obree battle his school day demons, and powerful statements like "You're the champion at cycling, cause you're always running away", make this a powerful movie. The whole movie is inspirational, to say the least.
It shows the struggle that a sportsperson has to put up with if the sport he's part of is not well popularised. I understand this point well, coming from India, where other than cricket, every other sport is given a step-motherly treatment.
You're cheering for Obree right upto the very end, and though the film ends kinda abruptly, it shows how Obree manages to not only sort out his professional life, but his personal life as well.
