Review of The Flowers of War (2011) by Mark H — 18 Dec 2011
4 out of 5 stars. Zhang Yimou, the most acclaimed Chinese director ever ("Ju Dou", "To Live", "Hero" and his masterpiece, "Raise the Red Lantern") has created one of the biggest films in Chinese film history.
At times brutal, violent and shocking (especially for the normally discreet Asian style), it is a powerful anti-war film set during the 1937 Japanese takeover as an American gets caught up protecting a group of schoolgirls hiding in a Nanking church from the advancing Japanese.
Christian Bale keeps getting better as an actor. Kind of a Chinese "Saving Private Ryan," it is an experience both epic and intimate in scale from one of the world's great directors. In English, Chinese and Japanese.
