Review of The Flowers of War (2011) by Daniel K — 22 Jul 2012
2: This was pretty strange. Christian Bale in a Zhang Yimou Chinese propaganda-ish internationally-marketed film. It is also apparently the most expensive film in Chinese history. While entertaining, and not nearly as overtly propaganda-ish as many Chinese productions, it is neither Yimou's not Bale's best work.
It was refreshing to see a story in which American's (Bales character) are portrayed so positively and the Japanese aren't all bad (although most are monsters as per usual). A bit of a disappointment, but I can't say I was surprised.
I think I might be more interested in the behind the scenes footage, especially if it included details of Bales trip to try to see Chen Guangcheng.
