Review of The Florida Project (2017) by Krang K — 03 Feb 2018
This movie was great! Painful. But great.
For some reason, it makes me recall Shindler's List. Painful. But great.
I was impressed by the acting. I was even more impressed by the clear child vs adult world taking place. With so many f'ed up adults dragging their kids along in the non-supportive adult world they live in and create, the development of the children suffer. No boundaries. No support. No life in reality. Finally, the children end up trying to escape one fantasy world for another, to their iconic fantasy land of Disney World.
The audience was silent at the end of the screening I was at. Almost as if they were stunned by how they observed such a realistic portrayal of a painful world. Awed by the experience. Very different than the silent audience at the end of the Last Jedi screening I was at on opening night. There the audience seemed silent because they couldn't believe how much they wouldn't care about what they just saw, i.e., flat out bored.
If you need happy movies to make you happy when you go to the theatre, then skip this film. If you appreciate great films, even when painful, don't miss this experience.
