Review of The Five-Year Engagement (2012) by Anthony R — 16 Oct 2012
Five-Year Engagement isn't among the ranks of its makers former productions (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek, etc.) but it's leaps and bounds ahead of most other studio comedies these days.
Engagement is overly long, doesn't let Segel stretch beyond his usual schtick of sloppy manchild, and thrives a little too much on the art of "callback" and "going on so long that it becomes funny" humor, but when a joke pays off, it really pays off.
It's hard to believe these stars and supporting cast members (made up of notable comedians like Brian Posehn, Kevin Hart, Chris Parnell, and Mindy Kaling) all live in the same universe, know each other, and everyone has a one-liner in any situation.
Broad slapstick gags will occur and then the tone shifts jarringly into a romantic-drama situation. The final joke, which is a callback to a scene that wasn't funny in the first place, makes you leave on a sour note, but not sour enough to make me not recommend you renting this.
