Review of The Five Obstructions (2003) by Justin A — 20 Oct 2008
"The Five Obstructions" is a movie made on two levels. One is it's about a man trying to puppeteer his mentor for the sake of proving he's overdone him in his career, and the other (which I think is the better) it's about a man past being constantly challenged to expand his horizons and creative genius despite the fact that the era he excelled in may have past him by.
These two focuses (which are not focused on simultaneously) will either captivate viewers because it challenges their own focus, or it will irritate them because to have a duel focus almost feels like the movie's deceitful for calling itself a documentary.
But I think if you focus 90% on the latter story and about 10% on the story which tries to validate it, this movie is strangely fascinating in how it reads into the unconscious mind of an artist so well.
