Review of The Fisher King (1991) by Chucho E. Q — 25 Dec 2007
I loved this movie. Yet another gem from Terry Gilliam. I think this marked the first time Robin Williams actually managed to prove that he can actually act in a semi-serious role, albeit playing a character who completely insane.
The performances on the whole, were noteworthy, particularly that of Mercedes Ruehl, who took home the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her work in this film. I think this film is an excellent portrayal of the extent to which some individuals would go for redemption.
Bridges' character is a shell of a man, seemingly kept alive by his quest to redeem himself in the eyes of Williams' character. What follows is a brilliant story, quite similar to what Reign Over Me (2005) strove for.
In fact, I'd say that film was a genuine rip-off of The Fisher King.
