Review of The Fisher King (1991) by Brad S — 19 Aug 2015
Sanity vs. Insanity. That thin line between them is what director Terry Gilliam seems to love exploring in his films. Maybe if I had seen The Fisher King when it originally came out, I'd appreciate it a little more, but in 2014, it just doesn't connect with me very much.
It just feels too repetitive and a little too stylized, as Gilliam's work tends to be. Both Wiliiams and Bridges give strong performances, but a little too strong. They both play caricatures of their characters and I had a hard time connecting or caring about either of them.
There are moments when everything meshes, but they are few and far between the mushy, messy most of the film. It's a valiant effort on everyone's part, but in the end, The Fisher King lands on that line in between good and bad.
