Review of The Fisher King (1991) by Mark C — 05 Nov 2009
Terry Gilliam does a romantic comedy? That's right. It's successful in a huge way. The performances are spot on for this kind of unique comedy. There's a style to this film, in true Gilliam fashion, which foreshadows every interior of every character.
This is a film you can watch with no sound and simply watch the way he uses space and movement dynamically. But the sound and music is not to be missed. "The Fisher King" is carefully crafted in its soundscape to bring to life this dreamy vision of contemporary New York.
The story, by first time writer Richard LaGravenese, is immaculate. This script really hit home for me; the questions it raises about guilt, gender, religion all transcend themselves. A truly unique and hilarious outlook on two worlds colliding.
