Review of The Fisher King (1991) by Tim C — 06 Dec 2009
A quirky, unconventional, oddly touching, sometimes intense, creative story of a former radio DJ (Jeff Bridges) who indirectly causes a mass murder and feels guilty to the point of suicide, but manages to sustain himself through his video-store girlfriend who wants him to commit but not be commited himself, played astutely by Mercedes Ruehl.
His life starts to changes when he meets Parry, a homeless man who believes himself is on a quixotic mission to find the Holy Grail, played by Robin Williams, who was a victim of the mass murder. Terry Gilliam finds fantasy and creativity in urban settings, which is just as crazy as the film's subject characters.
Mercedes Ruehl earns her Oscar by being the intelligent sanity that holds the rest of the characters and story like glue. Highly recommended.
