Review of The Fisher King (1991) by Tim E — 23 Mar 2014
The screenplay is full of nearly great individual elements . . . a modern day take on Arthurian Legend, a shock jock driven to depression, and a love story between an insane homeless man and a mousy woman.
However, each element only seems to exist to make the screenplay seem more complex than it actually is, a problem that could have been solved by focusing on just one of the individual elements of the messy plot.
Gilliam's direction basically salvages the film into something coherent (his visual brilliance is displayed perfectly in the dance sequence set in Grand Central Station), which is saying something because the sentimental story is at odds with the rest of his filmography.
