Review of The First Purge (2018) by Mister S — 03 Jul 2018
Michael Bay's influence is felt far more than Jason Blum's in what could have been a great social commentary / horror film but has instead been reduced to yet another clumsy action flick. The first film in this franchise had a solid horror premise that has been completely abandoned in subsequent entries.
Any social commentary this one was building toward was unceremoniously dropped in the 3rd act to deliver Die Hard with a discount Wesley Snipes (Y'lan Noel). Uneven pacing makes the 97 minute runtime seem far longer.
All of that said, this is still the 2nd best movie in the Purge franchise, though it isn't a high bar.
