Review of The First Purge (2018) by Christopher G — 04 Jul 2018
If you are a fan of the Purge franchise, you will enjoy this new addition. It has all the elements that we have become used to from prior chapters; violence, action, scariness, excitement, and a feeling of chaos. Is it revolutionary or novel, no, but, but it does have a good story line that provides context to the previous chapters in the franchise.
I am puzzled by some of the reviews that state the movie fails to give the reason behind the first Purge. It really isn't a surprise because in previous films, it was made clear that the Purge was meant to target the poor, unemployed, violent, and what they deemed to be costly neighborhoods, which, in the new government's view, tended to be areas with people of color. In purging these people from society the unemployment rate, crime rate, and expenditures for programs to support these poorer members of society would be decreased or ultimate eliminated. Once characters get past the pretext that the new government sells the American public and the utter confusion about the Purge, it becomes clear to most of the characters what the government's real intent was when they created the Purge.
Overall, I would not say that it is the best or worst movie of the year. I think that it is good summer movie to watch, if you have free time. Don't let some of the negative reviews dissuade you, because some of them are full of biases of a political and social nature due to the fact that they would like to social commentary of the movie.
