Review of The Final Girls (2015) by Nick P — 10 Oct 2016
After being hyped by almost everyone I know, and getting good critic reviews, I had to see this film. But after watching it, I didn't really think I had to anymore. It's got some talented directing and editing to salvage a pointlessly dorky script.
It's got some laughable moments, but most of the humor falls so short of original or funny...in fact the entire film is unoriginal. It's not just the ideas that aren't new, but the dialogue steals from every cliché in the book.
They could have at least added some horror elements to the horror/comedy film to make it worth sitting through the bad jokes...but it's not scary at any single moment. I get that it's a play on horror slasher films, but if it's meant to be a homage, it's almost an insulting one.
It's more of a spoof. The idea has been done. Get over it. And if you're gonna borrow everything that JASON has already created...at least make the killer menacing or terrifying, not a loser in a tiki mask.
Overall, I think this films takes horror, slasher and comedy a step back from brilliance like "Behind The Mask" and "Cabin in The Woods".
