Review of The Final Girls (2015) by Ian B — 28 Sep 2018
The Final Girls is a hilarious meta slasher that does a terrific job paying homage to a genre beloved by so many. The film revolves around a group of friends who wind up trapped inside a classic 80s slasher called 'Camp Bloodbath'.
It's essentially Friday the 13th meets Last Action Hero. It sounds ridiculous, it is ridiculous, but then again most slasher flicks are pretty ridiculous, and that's why the movie works. There are plenty of things that make The Final Girls a great film.
..a smart script, a fantastic cast, plenty of laughs, a genuine sense of love for the genre, and at its core is a wonderfully developed mother/daughter storyline that gives the film a surprising amount of emotional depth.
The movie embraces the cliches of the genre while also finding ways to throw in some nice twists. It gets a lot right, but there are also a few missed opportunities, the main one being an extreme lack of gore (something the slasher genre is kinda famous for).
The film is also far too polished, with plenty of needless fancy camerawork and CGI. The filmmakers would've been far better off trying to capture the low budget atmosphere slasher flicks are know for.
Still, despite the lack of gore and 80s vibe, the movie is still a blast to watch thanks to the cast, script and humour. The Final Girls is worth checking out whether you're a slasher fan or not.
