Review of The Final Countdown (1980) by Kevin G — 09 Apr 2010
Not a bad time traveling movie for it's time. It gets the job done. It's an OK time waster if you haven't seen it yet. Worth a rental.
One of the highlights of this film was that it was actually filmed on the USS Nimitz and the military even helped in the making of it. Because of this, the whole feel of the movie and how things are done on an aircraft carrier are all very realistic. The air scenes are pretty good too for their time. The small skirmish between the modern jets and the WWII era Japanese war planes was interesting to watch. Just shows you how much more ridiculously powerful jets are over the small war planes of the 1940's.
However some people though may have trouble sitting through the rather slow pacing of the film. Also because of this slow pacing, half the time I felt like I was sitting through a Navy recruiting video.
The story is pretty well told and I liked hearing the different opinions of everyone on what they thought they should do. Do you intervene and alter history or do you just stand aside?
Since Flixter isn't providing a description for this film, I've put a description below.
The USS Nimitz, a modern-day nuclear-powered aircraft carrier captained by Kirk Douglas, passes through a time warp and finds itself at Pearl Harbor on December 6, 1941. Douglas is all for preventing the infamous Japanese attack by unleashing the 1980s technology at his disposal. But wait--if history is inviolate, what will happen to future events if the attack doesn't come off?
