Review of The Filth and the Fury (2000) by Patrick D — 29 Jul 2009
Its in large part because of Filth and the Fury and the several other punk related documentaries that I'm such an avid fan of the genre. Much to the chagrin of every band that came before it, Punk wasn't a fad or a shitty musical style, it was a statement to be made, and bands like the Sex Pistols made that clear, maybe too clear.
Before I saw this documentary, I would in fact have said that I "loathed" the Pistols, loud and obnoxious filth. I was quickly proven wrong. What better way to preach to society the shit that the Man's trying to pull then by shouting and decimating eardrums.
A documentary that puts to rest many assumptions: Rotten is the good guy, Malcolm McLaren is evil, Steve Jones is a chick magnet, and Sid Vicious is his name incarnate. Speaking of, hearing John Lydon reminisce of Vicious and his last days, while nearly crying and losing himself, is worth the film alone.
Something I thought I'd never see.
