I was dragged to The Fighter and loved it. I expected a boxing drama and got a complex story that was more about family than pugilism. Some say the performances border on caricature; I think the Wards themselves border on caricature.
It doesn't matter whether Alice and Dicky, and the wonderful wolf pack of sister, were exaggerated. They brought a comic element to the movie that was unexpected and uproarious. A $200 debt invalidates one's opinions.
That was funny beyond words. Melissa Leo, Christian Bale and Amy Adams were amazing. And it was a good boxing drama too.
