Review of The Fighter (2010) by Steven C — 06 Apr 2012
"The Fighter" has David O. Russell's personality running through it's veins. His picture is energetic, visceral, funny, thrilling, emotional and taunt. He reinvents the boxing drama with unique cinematography and fun music choices.
The actors here have loads of room to play and Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Amy Adams are truly exceptional. Mark Whalberg, while good, is never really given anything more to do that be the films moral center.
He's trapped in his "Boogie Nights" complex where he plays the everyman while all the supporting roles get to shine. "The Fighter" works on many levels, as a family drama, as a sports drama, a romance and as a commentary on the people who live in the Lowell, Massachusetts.
"The Fighter" is engrossing stuff- it proves that with interesting characters you can still have fun with classic storytelling.
