This film made a sad, grim culture seem quite charming with odd direction and compelling, determined performances. Amy Adams and Christian bale were unrelenting and their characters' single scene together was my favourite in the whole film.

Wahlberg's performance felt weakest as it was fairly static but that might just reflect the real life personality it was based on and the cliched story arc of his character. The way the group of sisters behaved in the film had quite a 'Greek chorus' vibe, highlighting the absurd family dynamic while inviting audiences into the fold.
