Review of The Fighter (2010) by Dave H — 11 May 2012
The first half is so sensational that the climax comes across as oddly flat. No KO, but still a victorious film - part Rocky, part Good Will Hunting, part Terms of Endearment. It's less about boxing, more about family dysfunction, specifically those all-too-common aspects of softer personalities getting trodden over by harder ones, and more tolerant attitudes stuck between opposing extremist views.
Familiar in many ways. Undeniably an actors' film, with Leo, Adams and especially Bale mesmerizing to watch. Batman makes deadbeat Dicky incredibly endearing, and he surely deserved his Oscar.
