Review of The Fighter (2010) by James V — 01 Oct 2012
Far better than Raging Bull by a TKO! But still not the best boxing movie out there, that still belongs to the fictional efforts of Rocky Balboa! Following the early career of Micky Ward & his chance to win the Heavy Weight Championship of The World.
He has to overcome many obstacles from his dysfunctional, fractured family who are holding him back to his brother's drug addiction & brushes with the law but also his brother's almost legend status in the city of Lowell after his fight with Sugar Ray Leonard.
Christian Bale plays the brother Dicky Eklund, a former boxer himself, superbly with an Oscar winning performance throughout. Mark Wahlberg's acting isn't the best, no surprises there, but he powers through much like the boxing performance of the boxer he is portraying.
It's basically the real life scenario we always hear about, a kid brought up on the mean streets of...(insert any city with high unemployment & crime figures here) and rises to the very top of the boxing world & yet another soul saved from the mean streets by taking up boxing.
