Review of The Fighter (2010) by Philip S — 25 Jan 2013
The film is fine, but nothing you haven't seen before. Certainly over-hyped Oscar-wise. Dysfunctional New England family, yelling at each other ALL THE TIME, to the point of caricature. Christian Bale turns in a fine performance - certainly the highlight - while Wahlberg is his usual self.
Adams is watchable, but the rest of the cast was simply grating. By the way, although based on an "inspirational true story", it's not a family film, unless you want your kids to learn every cuss word in the book.
Where the movie really falters, like most boxing movies, is in the action. Here it is particularly bad. Some of it is stylized, but most of it is just ridiculous. "Let's have them trade uppercuts", 'cause that's what happens in boxing, right? Don't get me started on the Ramirez sequence.
The movie gets a pass overall, but there's no doubt the film is getting far more praise than it deserves.
