Review of The Fifth Estate (2013) by Alec R — 17 Oct 2013
Excellent film. Unfortunately, it not only requires the viewer to think, it also has no unnecessary respect for american hegemony and uber alles nonsense. Nuanced, thoughtful, brilliantly acted. The narrative style is unusual and challenging (probably yet another reason why it's getting dinged; people want something comfortable, simple, predictable, and pre-digested; this isn't any of those).
In fact, calling out not only the two principles, but the always wonderful Laura Linney and David Thewliss add gravitas and dimension to their smallish, but pivotal roles. From the look of the reviews, this film will probably die in the theaters this week; however, I would not be at all surprised if it became a classic.
Kudos to all involved.
