There's a great story percolating just beneath the surface in THE FIFTH ESTATE. It's the true story of the collateral damages caused by zealous Julian Assange, egocentric founder of WikiLeaks, an internet upstart that 'exposed the truth' behind the popular news that was normally fed to the public by the mainstream media.

THE FIFTH ESTATE should have been a film focused on how exposing classified information may have correlated some serious fallout around the globe, and there's a little of that, the best part indeed.

However for the most part, the film by Bill Condon [GODS AND MONSTERS] starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Assange and Daniel Brühl as his sacrificial business partner, spends way too much time creating interpersonal backstories about the men's relationship that don't add up to much.

As a result you're watching a movie that only hints at what it could have been and certainly one you wish were more compelling.
