Review of The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) by Fabián A — 09 May 2009
Many people will see this one for the beauty of Sharon Tate and the link of romance with Polanski and the tragedy we all now, or many at least. But Fearless Vampire Killers... is a great foolish comedy, a film that doesn't demand anything from its audience except the desire of having fun.
The jokes are plain silly even with the use of fast motion to make the vampires look like goons running through the halls of a Castle. The nutty professor and his apprentice (played by Polanski) is a weird couple.
I think this film is a little old and modern audiences do not get the feeling of comedy that inspired Polanski this time, but I applaude the intention of a master in suspense to mix his genre and simply craft a comedy in the note of The three stoges or The Marx Brothers.
There are wonderful scenes and another not so great, but if you are a fan of Polanski and do not take too serious films, as if every picture must be an avant garde of culture, try this one.
