James Stewart is simply terrific in this, and I really think it's one of his most underrated performances. Miles and Hamilton are good, too, and director LeRoy presents the material with a straight-forward, workmanlike style that suits the subject matter extremely well.
Having said that, the film is a touch overlong and decidedly episodic (something that was probably unavoidable), but neither of those are enough to cripple the movie as a whole.
