Review of The Family Stone (2005) by Dan J — 28 Nov 2010
"The Family Stone" sounds like a holiday movie that should work. Meeting your future in-laws during the holidays would be stressful for anyone. And first impressions, feeling awkward and out-of-place would be expected. There are many directions that this movie could have gone. I actually went back to rethink this review from my first impression.
This is a movie that doesn't direct its audience on which way to judge, and that is commendable. At first meeting, the Stone family attacks Sarah's Meredith for what appears to be a volley of superficial reasons. But then again, Meredith does appear to be everything the Stone family is attacker of.
Ultimately, the director is showing us that we do some of the same things that the Stone family does to Meredith, until Meredith starts to relax a little.
