Review of The Falling (2015) by Tony P — 21 Oct 2015
A deeply disturbing film that is a period drama cum suspense set in a 1969 school for girls.
Basically the film focuses on a character called Lydia. Her disturbed family life, her sexual development and friendship with another girl Abbie.
The strict all girls school she attends is the main backdrop to the film. In particular some strange 'fainting/seizure/deaths' that occur amongst some pupils and staff.
The film features some rather taboo subject matters including scenes of incest, schoolgirl lesbianism, neglectful parenting akin to child abuse and the mystery fainting episodes that sweep the school.
I prefer my films black and white (not colour) but right and wrong. Throughout the film and even at its conclusion my questions were not answered akin to a sense of frustration.
Perhaps this was the intention of director Carol Morley. Either way it wasn't my cup of tea.
Some of the controversial stories although manma to soap opera writers proved to much of a distraction from the central plot of the film.
The young actress who plays the central character puts in a good performance.
The music score is haunting like the subject matters.
Sorry not for me.
