Review of The Fall (2006) by Silvia O — 06 Mar 2010
Well, as it has been said many times before, this movie is absolutely stunning from a visual point of view. However, there's unfortunately another element of the movie that strikes the viewer almost as much as the beautiful imagery, and that's the sense of something missing which surrounds this movie.
It feels as if small little fragments were lost along the way between the script and the screen. To me, it seems that the main (but not the only) problem was the lead young actress Catinca Untaru. Now I know a lot of people don't agree with me, and I understand why. She talks and acts exactly like a five-year-old ought to, which gives her performance an incredibly realistic quality. But as it happens, real-life five-year-olds can be really annoying, and that also shows in the movie. Besides, this one ultra-realistic performance (which barely qualifies as acting, I might add, since it's the director and other actors who really drew it out of her) feels completely out of place besides all the other characters.
The scenery and costumes do manage to make it a truly beautiful movie, but on all other aspects, I would only qualifyThe Fall as "decent". And the worst part is that I think it had the potential to be a really great movie, but failed.
