Review of The Fall (2006) by No O — 09 Jun 2010
A beautiful film both visually and emotionally speaking, The Fall tells two unique tales that are also completely dependent on one another. Both stories (one a real-world tale set in the 1920s dealing with despair and the rejuvenating power of imagination, the other a larger-than-life fantasy filled with mythic bandits hell-bent on revenge) are engrossing and are interwoven so magically that discovering just how much they overlap is an added bonus to simply watching and enjoying the film on the narrative level.
Before seeing the movie, I heard mostly about the striking visuals director Tarsem brings to the screen. What I did not expect was, to perfectly complement these visuals, such a genuine pair of actors in Lee Pace and Catinca Untaru, whose relationship is the cement that binds the over-the-top visuals together and keeps the sometimes nonsensical fantasy adventures from losing the viewer.
