Review of The Fall (2006) by Fifi M — 25 Sep 2010
"The Fall" is an imaginative movie directed beautifully with real emotion behind it, what more could you ask for?
The most noticeable aspect of this movie is its fantastical direction. The epic portions of this movie have a sense of space and color that make them seem larger than life. It is as if they leaped out of Alexandria's imagination directly onto the screen. Speaking of Alexandria, Catinca Untaru's performance makes this movie. That bears repeating, a little girl no more than 9 years old blows most of the performances in years out of the water. Sure, you could say she is just playing a little girl, and it isn't much of a stretch, but that would miss the amount of emotion she pours into the role. The finale is a real tearjerker thanks mostly to her overwhelming pleas for a happy ending. Along the way her interruptions to the story are often laugh-out-loud funny, thanks in large part to the childlike innocence she injects into the part. On top of all that she is so damn adorable the viewer can't help but root for her. Pace also does an admirable job, but his character is a bit one-sided for him to strut his stuff, serving mostly as a foil for Alexandria.
"The Fall" is a grand story and a small bittersweet tale all rolled into one impressive package.
