Review of The Fall (2006) by Dave M — 11 Feb 2013
Unlike other single name credited directors like Pitof (Catwoman) and Kaos (Ballistic: Ecks Vs. Sever), Tarsem has mad directing chops. The movie is pure inspired art in the same vein as Pan's Labyrinth although this one doesn't have as strong a story as Pan's.
The characters and performances are engaging and the music is epic but what really drives the film are its visuals. The credits are shown over a gorgeous black/white sequence that's obviously inspired by the 30s era silent films as well as photographs that just seem to capture the perfect angle and emotion.
The rest of the film is a color injected eyegasm. Obvious influences include Dali and Escher but the cuts to and from the story are so fluent that even the supposed reality is a visual treat. By far one of the most inspiring films this year.
Damn it I just wanna go out and direct a music video/ commercial. Just something. Anything! Fuck me for not having a camera.
