Review of The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) by Michael R — 06 Nov 2009
Real life brothers Jeff and Beau Bridges bring a genuine sibling chemistry to their roles as the "Fabulous Baker Boys", a smalltime piano duo in need of a singer, Michelle Pfeiffer. While Pfeiffer's vocals are impressive, the dramatic performances she gives during her songs far outshine her singing, as she allows her character to get swept away in the music, like some wonderful drug is removing her from her unhappy existence.
Slickly tied together with Dave Grusin's smooth original compositions (plus some lovely arrangements of preexisting favourites), this film is a must see for anyone who is a fan of jazz.
