Review of The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) by Christopher S — 16 Dec 2010
Hugely underrated film that showcased Michelle Pfeiffer's talents. This film showed she was not just a beautiful face but a talented and sultry one too. The sexual tension between Jeff Bridges and Pfeiffer might not have been on the level of Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor (or William Hurt and Kathleen Turner) but it was hot.
The chemistry between the Bridges brothers was very good too and you can definitely tell they are siblings. The story was good and understated and Steve Kloves really sold the stars (Pfeiffer especially) in this film.
The pacing was moderately good, slow when it needed to be and fast when it needed to be. I thought Kloves could have done more on Jack Baker's passion for jazz a bit more but no worries. Definitely one of the best musically themed films of the last 30 years.
