Review of The Eyes of My Mother (2016) by Nell A — 16 Dec 2016
Although it is undeniably creepy and sad, beautifully shot and ambitious, it is simply too pretentious to say both nothing and everything at the same time. The movie attempts to show how one illness and tragedy can spin off into a spiral of madness, gore, and more tragedy - but fails to drive the point home or give the characters enough depth and reality to really be as heart wrenching as it SHOULD be.
It is simply too concerned with making loneliness and gore look pretty to really get deep enough into its emotional themes to do the images it shows justice. When horror is not "SCARY scary" it needs to at least dive so deep you almost feel ill after - this movie was about to, but never did.
