Review of The Experiment (2010) by The D — 20 Aug 2010
A film never likely to shy away from trying to disturb you. But as you expect it to it does lose a little of it's shock factor. It's like Scum with observers.
A group of men volunteer to take part in a 2 week psychological experiment. Sent to a remote facility some are chosen to be prison guards the others prisoners.
The story centres on Adrien Brody's pacifist & Forest Whitakers quiet man.
They seem to be friends but as both Brody's beliefs are tested to breaking point Whitaker thrives on the power he has as guard & the fear he strikes into others both inmate & fellow guard.
Ultimately the tension builds as knowing they will not be paid unless the experiment is completed the guards struggle to keep control whilst maintaining the safety of all concerned.
The ethics of the story being that are we really that far along the evolutionary scale from a monkey?
Everybody plays their part well & it's intriguing but not as hard hitting as I think it wanted to be.
