Review of The Experiment (2010) by Alex M — 21 Mar 2011
All things considered, this is a pretty good movie. It's not even as close to being as good as the original movie. But Adrien Brody is definitely a cooler guy than the main character in the original movie.
And that's very important, because in Das Experiment, the main character was supposed to be this cool and rebellious type of guy but he never came across that way because there was something about his face that made him look like just the biggest douche ever.
I just wanted to punch him in the face. Thankfully, the character grew on me as the movie went along. Adrien Brody, not so douche-y looking. So yea, this was good stuff. I think with this type of story, its really easy to make it work.
In fact, it would take some royal fuck-up for it to not work. And this movie doesn't fuck it up. I think what Das Experiment had that this movie didn't have was the head guard in the original movie was just OUT of this world.
I usually never get into movies to the point where I'm like 'This guy is so evil, I can't wait till he's killed' but I couldn't WAIT to see this guy get his. He was just fantastic in the role.
And Forest Whitaker, as hard as he tries, couldn't come close to that. Especially with the end this movie has, which I felt was completely unsatisfying. So get this, the prisoners revolt and they start going after the guards to beat them up.
Then the experiment is stopped and the guards and prisoners are released. They then sit on the grass as if nothing had happened. Benjy died and they're like...'Ok...well experiment's over'.
I didn't buy any of it, especially after what they've all been through. For them to just sit on the grass as if nothing had happened really hurt the movie. The movie's still good though, I just like the idea of this experiment being done and seeing how people react when put in the position of power.
It's just an interesting way to tell a story. So yea, that's about it. Good movie, the original is better though. I got to see both for free, so I ain't complaining.
