Review of The Expendables (2010) by Dan D — 05 Dec 2012
A mans movie! A movie for men and men only with men fighting other men who are shooting back at the men who are men...MEN MEN MEN MEN MEN MEN MEN MEN MEN!!!!!!!! Thats what the movie is driving on, also the fact of it's cast.
The bigger the cast, the less the screen time. The Expendables does what it needs to do, satisfy the guys with action and uh, thats it, yeah, no breasts. This is pretty much a PG-13 action film with digital blood spewing all over the place.
With a film like this, story doesn't matter, character studies don't matter, nothing really matters other than seeing shit blown up. Theres really not much to say about this. The action is pretty cool, especially the climax where Terry Crews shows that HE IS a badass.
I will give the movie credit, with Mickey Rourke's character, they add some depth rather than making all the characters two dimensional. The only problem is that the film really did slow down in the middle, I give credit it at least tried to have a story but at the same time, it just felt like they had filler to put in so the film wouldn't be an hour.
The guys will see it, the girls won't (maybe some) but what it comes down to is the action is cool but everything else is pretty hollow. That's not always a bad thing, look at Crank 2 arguably one of the best action films of the decade in my opinion.
There was maybe 10 minutes of no action but it worked with Crank 2 because it knew what it wanted to be and stayed to it. Funny how I gave this three and a half stars and all I really talked about was the action, no, I didn't give that rating solely because of the action, I was interested, wanted to see the characters kick some ass, and just had a fun time seeing this movie in HD.
Yeah, I saw this in HD in theaters with surrond sound, lucky me. I don't know if it's in theaters anymore but if it is, check it out if you have some time.
