As far as scary movies go, this one is absolutely my top pick! Aside from the masterfully done *GOTCHA!!!* moments, there are some really great performances in this movie, as well. George C. Scott is very emotionally powerful, which is beautifully counterbalanced with Ed Flanders's lighthearted, yet rapier wit.
The absolute winning performance though comes from Brad Dourif (Wormtongue of The Lord of the Rings movies) as the sociopathic gemini serial killer. Chilling. Great movie. Big thumbs up!
