Review of The Exorcist III (1990) by Evan B — 22 May 2012
Almost a great film!
So many scenes done well... with chills ensuing. Other scenes so sloppy, confusing, with bizarre "witty" conversations and vague references to "red shoes" and "Billy Burke.".
Some of the slowest scenes are too slow... such as Kinderman wandering around an office and corridor, as the lights go out in an administration building... or the night shift nurse, doing her duties before the inevitable murderer comes out to play.
The well crafted conversations between kinderman and the "Zodiac killer" could have also been condensed.
The exorcism at the end of the film was not a terrible idea, but the over the top way it was constructed dishonors the original film. A priest squished like a bloody bug on the ceiling? The grandiose kinderman speech just before some hellish vision? Yuck. Other than the annoying "growl" heard through the film, it was subdued and slow. Then it turns into a comic book!
Thankfully, the film avoids the blasphemous gnostic theory the book presented... that the universe... and the human race... is in fact the angel lucifer. An angel disassembled and evolving back into itself. HOW NICE... instead of fighting the devil, humans ARE the devil. Boo.
